“And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this very day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served which were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose help you get dwell. A popular children’s game is “follow the leader”. While the game is being played, anyone has control. Everyone else needs to duplicate his actions. Players who neglect to do what the leader does are out of the game. Once the game has ended, the leader reverts to being like everyone else. Following Jesus comes with great praise as well as great potential for persecution. Adhering to Jesus requires a denial of self. Following Jesus requires an undivided heart. You cannot follow Jesus plus anything or anyone else.
This truth was expressed beautifully in an aged public domain hymn, lyrics attributed to Ersus. Sundar Singh.
I have decided to adhere to Jesus
No turning back, no turning back.
Though none choose me still I will follow
